BARCELONA, Spain, Feb 17, 2009 — 2009 MWC — Broadcom Corporation (Nasdaq: BRCM), a global leader in semiconductors for wired and wireless communications, today announced that its combined Bluetooth® and FM radio single-chip solution is featured in the new award-winning YP-P3 MP3 player from Samsung Electronics. Equipped with the Broadcom® BCM2048 combo chip, the new P3 Media Player was a ‘Best of Show’ winner at the recent International Consumer Electronics Show (CES) in the music category and an honoree of that show’s “Innovations 2009 Design and Engineering Award.” Broadcom’s demonstrated leadership in Bluetooth combo chips and software makes it a natural partner for makers of innovative consumer electronics devices, where space and power consumption are critical and best-in-class technology is required.

Bluetooth is widely available in mobile handsets and hands-free wireless headsets, and is now featured in a variety of consumer electronics devices such as digital televisions, Blu-ray Disc® players and set-top boxes, expanding its ecosystem while shaping the user entertainment experience of these advanced devices. As multiple top-tier TV and Blu-ray player manufacturers bring new products to market that include Bluetooth, cutting-edge personal media players are also featuring Bluetooth in greater numbers. Bluetooth provides users with a richer, untethered entertainment experience and a growing base of products to connect with, enabling new features such as ‘picture push’ and remote control applications. Broadcom projects that the combined market for key consumer electronics devices incorporating Bluetooth will be as many as 454 million units in 2009.

“We see the award-winning P3 as part of the growing Bluetooth adoption trend and its expansion in the home now includes an ecosystem of new devices such as digital TVs, Blu-ray Disc players and set-top boxes,” said Craig Ochikubo, Vice President & General Manager of Broadcom’s Wireless Personal Area Networking line of business. “No other company can deliver a comprehensive portfolio of best-in-class software and advanced combo chip technology in support of these applications.”

“As a leading innovator, Samsung continues to redefine the user experience by incorporating features like haptic feedback and wireless audio streaming in its products to provide the ultimate personal entertainment experience for our consumers,” said Mr. Joo-Yong Lee, Principal Engineer of Samsung Electronics. “By continuing to adopt innovative technologies from partners like Broadcom, we are delivering on that commitment as seen with our new feature-rich P3 player.”

Samsung P3 Portable Media Player

The P3 widescreen portable media player was introduced at the 2009 International Consumer Electronics Show and recognized for its evolutionary EmoTure™ interface with true haptic feedback and forward-thinking design. Even at just 0.39 inches thin, the P3 squeezes a 16:9 widescreen video player, studio-quality audio player, ultra-portable photo album, personal voice recorder, FM radio, and even a portable storage drive into one compact device. The P3 can also be paired with a Bluetooth-enabled phone, allowing the use of the built-in microphone to answer calls directly through the player.

Broadcom’s Bluetooth Technology

The P3 features the BCM2048 Bluetooth combo chip, the industry’s most complete, turnkey Bluetooth design platform for embedded and multimedia applications. The BCM2048 integrates Bluetooth and FM radio on a single chip and utilizes Broadcom’s unique InConcert® collaborative co-existence technology that allows simultaneous operation of multiple radios in the same device, with minimal interference. Additionally, Broadcom offers the most complete Bluetooth software in the industry, maintaining end-to-end integration of its protocol stack, application profiles, and audio enhancement and processing algorithms.

The 4GB Samsung MP3 Player comes in two guises, the Samsung YP-S5 and the Samsung YP-T10 both offer bluetooth wireless connections, but only the Samsung YP-S5 incudes slide out speakers. The YP-S5 looks a little like an open laptop with a base and angled screen, where the angled screen is actually hiding the speaker system while the YP-T10 looks more like a mobile phone with a large two inch screen for watching videos.

The YP-S5 has the larger feature set including built in clock, FM radio recorder, 4GB internal memory and playing MP3 and WMA file formats. This 4GB Samsung MP3 player supports ID3 tags, so the album, artist and track information will appear on the 1.8 inch LCD screen. This MP3 player can be charged from a USB socket in 5 hrs (from flat) or a mains socket in 3 hrs. The YP-S5 will play back MP4 videos and display jpeg files on the internal screen.

The software included runs on Windows XP and above computers and uses USB 2.0 technology when available in your PC for super fast data transfer. With a weight of only 85g it’s remarkable that Samsung managed to pack in a User Definable EQ and voice recording.

The other 4GB Samsung MP3 Player in the line up is the Samsung YP-T10 which includes massive codec support WMA,MP3,OGG,JPEG,WMV,MPEG and an unbelievable two inch LCD TFT screen just like the one on your home flat screen monitor operating at QVGA resolution which is remarkable. The YP-T10 has a massive number of EQ presets no matter what your taste in music Normal, Studio, Rock, Classical, Jazz, Ballad, R&B, Club, Dance, Concert Hall.

Should you be looking for a 4GB Samsung MP3 Player that can operate in languages other than English, then take a look at this massive range of languages: English, Korean, French, German, Italian, Japanese, Chinese, Spanish, Russian, Hungarian, Dutch, Polish, Portuguese, Swedish, Thai, Finnish, Danish, Norwegian, Turkish, Latin, Ukraine, Bulgarian and Romania.

This 4GB Samsung MP3 Player has a metal body which is extremely rare for MP3 players as these days everybody expects gadgets to be made of plastic so it’s a very nice change to see a metal body on the YP-T10. This 4GB Samsung MP3 Player can also play back a massive 30 hrs of audio before the batteries are exhausted or 4 hrs of video.

A very interesting feature of the YP-T10 is the ability to vary the speed at which an MP3 file is played back, so if you feel the track is too fast or slow, now you can make your own adjustment. The YP-T10 also includes book marking support to book mark your favourite tracks, that’s such a useful feature that I hope other manufacturers adopt.

Unique features of these two 4GB Samsung MP3 Players are that the YP-S5 has an FM radio recorder to record your favourite radio shows in MP3 format and the YP-T10 has a quality metal body and bookmark support.

Whichever 4GB Samsung MP3 Player you choose, you will find that both offer intuitive technology such as track bookmarks, ID3 tag support and metal body units.
